Supercuts

These supercuts offer different ways of compiling the appearances of vinyl in American independent films from 1987 to 2018. In a written academic format, this would be the section in which I identify the corpus under investigation. The supercuts serve that function, but also experiment with different ways of presenting that corpus: all the videos may be arranged chronologically, but each differs considerably in how the visual material is organised and how image is related to the soundtrack. Supercut 4 features in the Sight and Sound poll of best video essays of 2019.

I discuss the academic value of these supercuts in an article published in NECSUS, in the section entitled ‘The scholarly value of the supercut: ‘Simple’ compilations and ‘critical’ montages’. You can access the article here.
